Who am I? It is an essential question that we all must ask ourselves and one that is not so easily answered. However, I will attempt to give you an accurate description of who I am. First it is important to know that I am a Christian. What exactly does being a Christian mean? The term was first used in Antioch which was recorded in Acts 11:26. “and when he found them he brought them to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and taught large numbers. The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch.” The English translation of this term unfortunately loses some of it’s significance. In order to fully understand exactly what the term means we must go back to it’s Latin roots. In Rome families distinguished between individuals being born into a family and people being adopted into a family with an ending on the middle name of ianus. In fact, according to Dr. Jordan Almanzar, “These middle names were the most important because they were the most ancient and signified the gens, what I have been calling the ‘tribe’ or ‘clan’. Tribal names were initially markers of specific nations or even races. In fact, some of them claimed origins stemming from before the Trojan War (twelfth or thirteenth century BC) when each gens would have been considered (and thought of themselves as) a nation unto themselves.” It is important to note that the Latin term for Christian is Christiani, however, the Greek term that was used in the Biblical text was Χριστιανός which utilizes the Latin function ianus. As Dr. Almanzar explained, “Just how the Latin function –ianus came to influence and even create the Greek term (Χριστιανός for Christianus) remains obscure. But given what was said before concerning Latin tribal names, the specific origins matter less than what this new word would have conveyed to those who understood it. A Christianus was an adopted member of a new tribe, the Christus tribe, the tribe of Christ. He was set apart from the world and belonged to a new nation.” This is an astounding title for someone given by a people who knew nothing about Christians when we learn that Christ himself said we are adopted into God’s family and that we are a brand new creation. “But to all who did receive Him, He gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in His name.” John 1:12. To be a Christian is not merely to have adopted one religion out of many, but to have been called out by Christ into a new nation, a heavenly one. Therefore, as a Christian I am not part of some mainstream religion, nor am I part of any cultural norm.
Secondly, I am married to my wonderful husband Nicky. We live in Oklahoma with our two cats and bunny. After three failed relationships I never thought I would find my “one”. I always thought my Prince Charming would come to rescue me as dramatically as one of the heroes in my dearly loved fantasy novels. He did! Just not in the way I expected. With many awkward ramblings of song lyrics, much sarcasm, and shared mutual nerdom we slowly got to know and trust each other. Our fairytale romance spanned many miles and eventually we finally met in Charlotte, NC airport both of us knowing we were going to end up married. A huge thank you to our mutual friend Izzy who gave me the courage to reach out on FB to the complete stranger who has become my best friend, my prince charming, my emo turtle, my husband. We hope to expand our little nerd family through adoption soon.
Third, I mentioned our furbabies, two cats and a bunny. I have always loved animals and had them around me. My first word according to my mom and dad was horse. I grew up with horses and had one until college and work forced me to give him a home that had more time for him. His name was Codi and he won me numerous ribbons in 4-H horse shows after hours of training and practice. I miss him dearly even though he now has a cushy job taking care of sweet four year old twin boys. I have always had cats and dogs and my hubby and I currently have two of our own, Milkshake and Moses. Milkshake was my hubby’s cat before we got married. She was a rescue and saved him as much as he saved her. Moses was our first kitten together and he was a bottle baby. My dad found him in my parents barn and we took him in much to Milkshakes chagrin. We added our litte bunny Rocket about a year later and he is our little mischief maker. He loves to play with Moses.
Fourth, I love books, music, and crafting. I have been reading ever since I can remember and always have several books on hand “just in case”. My favorites to read are fantasy, sci fi, history, my Bible biographies about my favorite bands or singers, mysteries, and young adult. I currently make bracelets, paint, draw, scrapbook, and make cards. I love singing and some of my favorite music consists of emo, rock, punk, and metal. Music was one of the things that got me through school and brought me to my husband. It’s not a phase mom!
To conclude, I am a Christian, a wife, an animal lover, a nerd, and someone who doesn’t fit in and is perfectly ok with that.
